Book Five and Other Things

First, let me say I’m sorry for neglecting my website for so long. Many of you have said very nice things about my books and I’m grateful that you’ve enjoyed them.

Book five (tentively titled Cursed Bones) should be available in December. Having said that, I’m still working on it and it’s far more important that I do it well than quickly, so if I hit a snag I may have to push that release date back.

I’m planning a total of seven books for this series and I hope to release subsequent books every six to nine months.

As for Nook readers, I’m sorry but I have no plans to release book four in Nook format at this time due to an exclusivity agreement with Amazon’s Kindle Select program.

Thank you again for your kind words and support. The Seven Isles has come to mean a great deal to me and I’m genuinely humbled that many of you have come to love this world as much as I do.

  2. John Moore says:

I have thoroughly enjoyed your series of Sovereign of the Seven Isles.Glad to see that more are to come i.e. 5-7. The only comment I have to make on this is that you should ‘Get your finger out’and get them finished.By the time yhe next one comes out I could have moved on to something else and forgotten these. ( I’m getting on a bit and the memory isn’t what it was).Seriously really looking forward to it

Man I have got to get some sleep….

I really was not looking for a full blown fantasy epic just wanted a little light reading. Something that could fill a little spare time for the next week or two. Instead I found Thinblade.

Read the synopsis and decided to hit the try a sample on my kindle.

Should of had a warning label about loss of sleep. I’m well into book 4 now and I’m not gonna be able to put it down… Guess I can fill the week and a half I have left sleeping.

Very nice work and thank you!

  4. Jeryme Hunter says:

I read Thinblade in about a day. I could not put it down! Then i saw there were 3 more books in this series and bought them. My wife took my kindle away after two days and said you have to get some sleep! I can not wait for the rest of the books to be published!

  5. Melinda says:

How about a mailing list for thenext release? I would hate to miss it!

  6. Craig says:

Really enjoyed the series so far, and extremely happy that No5 is underway and due out towards the end of the year. Also happy to see that you’ve committed yourself to min 7 books, but if I’m honest I’m hoping you have a change of heart and decided to extend the series further.

thanks again for sharing this amazing world with us!

  7. Brent says:

Hey, found your books a few days ago, and just finished the fourth. Looking forward to reading the fifth. I started having a bad time on the fourth as one bad thing after another occurred, but you won me back before the end. Don’t worry about how many books it takes, just tell the story as it comes. The worst thing would be reading a bunch of filler if you tried to expand it farther than it needs to be. Can’t wait to see what happens with Alexander’s newest friend.

    • Brandon says:

I’ve been reading this series for the last week and a half and just finished it up. It’s been a great ride so far and I’m honestly looking forward to book five in December hopefully. You have a great story unfolding here but I would have to agree with Brent, because I would hate to have such a great story sputter or lose that aura of captivation you’ve works so hard creating due to fillers just to stretch it out to seven books.

  8. Jason W says:

    Thanks for the update David.

I was a little skeptical when I read book 1, I won’t lie, but at this point I’m not on the fence at all. Looking forward to your upcoming books, and I could not agree with you more. Do it right, Don’t rush, just follow your heart.. the stories in there.

  9. Jerry says:

How is “Thinblade” getting so many reviews all of a sudden? I bought the book in May, roughly a year after it was published, and really liked it, but it only had 10 reviews at the time. I ask because I just published a book the same way you did and would like to get a lot of reviews too.

  10. Brad says:

Loved the books. Book 1 took a week or so to reed but after that I have finished the other three in two days each. If you do make a mailing list for the release of book 5. Please put me on it. Thanks for a great read.

  11. Anthony says:

These books are amazing. I am really hoping that book five doesn’t get pushed back, I really enjoyed book four and just finished it.

  12. Anne says:

Finished the entire series today and it will be a long wait until book 5 is released in December. I am going to but a note on my calender to being checking for it on Dec. 1. I am glad that you are taking the time to make it the best you can; as I stated earlier this is the best fantansy series that I’ve read since Sword of Truth. Thanks for sharing the story with us.

  13. Josh says:

Awesome books mate, very original storyline that has good continuity and enough twists and turns to keep me reading. I sincetely hope others find out about your excellent writing soon!

  14. bev macbain says:

Fantastic series in which i read every word and savoured every battle and struggle Alexander and Isabel faced only sorry book 5 is not available for reading as its very compelling thnank you for your gift in telling this wonderful epic story

  15. Will says:

I am loving this series and can’t wait for book 5. Only thing that puts me off a little is: Alexander and Isabel seem too hopelessly outmatched by Phane, which will make the outcome somewhat less “believable” when they ultimately pull off some miracle to defeat him. (Assuming of course that you don’t shock us all by letting Phane win). Might want to consider making the contest a little more even, which might actually increase the suspense. Of course this is free advice and we all know that free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it.

  16. Tina says:

Absolutely fantastic reading, couldn’t put them down, please hurry up and do book five, can’t wait. Thank you for your hard work.

  17. Nancy says:

I am almost finished with Sovereign Stone and I am about to purchase the next two books. Thank you for allowing Kindle versions! This story is incredible!

  18. James Bletch says:

I read book 1 and was hooked! Started book 2 8/30/12 and HOPE 5 comes out before i finish the first 4.

  19. Jacob says:

I bought book 1 two weeks ago and couldn’t put it down. Had to wait to buy book 2 cuz I didn’t have WiFi connection. Got the book 48 hours ago and I am now ordering books 3 and 4. This is a good read. The storyline keeps you hooked. Can’t wait for books 5, 6 and 7. KEEP WRITING!!

  20. Nick Moore says:

This series is possibly one of the best I’ve read in a very long time. Easily comparable to LOTR. I can’t wait to collect and read the next 3. I have to say, I couldn’t put the books down to save my life.

  21. James Rae says:

One of the best books I have read.i am not much of a reader but I have read all 4books in a month.Ask the wife I haven’t spoke to her at night because the books have grip me as if I was their fighting the war with them.Just brilliant can’t wait untill the next book

  22. richard says:

loved the series can’t wait for next book

  23. Eddie Anderson says:

Awesome series!!!! I have read alot of these types of series and I have to admit that this is one of the best that I have ever read! Sometimes when reading these types of books you can get bored with one negative thing after another happening to the “good guys”!But I think you do an amazing job of allowing positive
things to happen as well throughout your story!!! Great job and I can’t wait for the next release!!!

  24. Eric.C. says:

By far my favorite series Ive discoveted through amazon. The characters are likeable and over the course of the first four Ive become very attached to them. cant wait for the next installment.

  25. JoeBob says:

I just finished book 4 and immediately searched for a book 5 release date. I’m an avid fantasy reader, and this series officially ranks in my top 5, but somehow only cost a few bucks instead of 50+. This will be my top recommendation to all of my friends that use kindle as well!

  26. Judy G. says:

Loved the books. Read all 4 and
    can’t wait for number 5.
Hope there are more dragons in
    number 5.

  27. dennis says:

Well I know what I want for Christmas now.

  28. FailedSeppuku says:

Just about to start book 4 and already peeking at when 5 is due. Take my money already.

Great easy read but no one dies, it’s worse than shonen. I thought someone was due a good death at the end of book 3 only to be revived last minute.

Perhaps if everyone were to die Isabel could wake up and find Alexander in the shower and realise it was all just a bad dream, perhaps save that for book 9.

  29. Ali Stoneman says:

Really really enjoyed reading these books. Can’t wait for the next one! It’s books like these that make the kindle great.
    thank you very much

  30. Gary says:

I have thoroughly enjoyed the 1st 4 books and I think I may need to wait for the last 3 to be finished before I continue with the series. I simply cannot put myself through waiting for the next part of the story. Great story, resonating characters and beautiful imagery. Thank you

  31. Kev says:

Have enjoyed the series. Book one to three where hard to put down. By halfway through book four though I was finding it easy to put down. Not sure what changed.

  32. Stan McKenna says:

Just finished book 4 and have thoroughly enjoyed the ride thus far. Looking forward to the next installment. As little Anja has taken a liking to Alexander will he become a dragon rider??

  33. Roltyde1 says:

I bought book one(Thinblade) on a whim. Before I had completed half, I ordered book two. Am ordering three and four at the same time so I can be ready for five when it is finished. Story telling and chracter development are outstanding.

  34. C.S. Murphy says:

First off, I have enjoyed every word of this series!
I would compare it favorably to the original five volumes of the Chronicles of Amber series by the late Roger Zelazny. Of course you opt for a young man discovering his patrimony and being thrust into leadership rather than the jaded middle aged Corwin, but the depth of history, tradition, myth and legend is reminiscent of Zelazny’s master work.
Perhaps my favorite aspect is the manner in which you eschew melodramatic handwringing and self-doubt in Alexander. Too many authors use this mechanism to kill space and inflate their page count, without an iota of value in advancing the narrative.
Alexander doesn’t whine and moan to himself or wander off into soliloquies of self-doubt. This rings true to me. Most young men don’t think that way either–at least I didn’t, and now with decades more life experience, I still don’t. Right or wrong as the leader of the Seven Isles Alexander realizes he must at least make a decision and he does so in a logical and action oriented fashion: identify the problem(s), develop strategy to combat problem, act decisively, and refine his actions as the problem or circumstances change. Oh, and of course delegate, trust those who earn trust, but verify. I appreciate that approach.
As the main character you have imbued him with sufficient emotion to round out his character, but also avoided wallowing in non-plot focused sentimentality or digression. This really makes the Sovereign series a pleasure to read.
In addition, you don’t force your reader to languish in despair after unfortunate events for overly long—enough for dramatic effect, but with the possible exception of Isabel’s mana fast, the action picks up again quickly. Fortunate for me, when I reached that plot twist I was reading on a Kindle and couldn’t throw it across the room in frustration as I have done in the past with paperbacks by other authors.
Mr. Wells, I also suspect that after the seventh or eighth novel concludes this narrative, the rich world of the Seven Isles will lend itself to a prequel—there is just too much that has transpired before the Thinblade to let the tale end there.
Please make all due haste in fielding book five.

  35. jonathan says:

So I really hope that in book five or somewhere along the way the device that lucky offered to use against the first netherwolfs the blackness that turns anything it touches into more of itself should be used on ZUHL’S ARMY its like the best next thing to a nuke

  36. John Bruno says:

I have been reading fantasy books for over twenty years and I have to say this is the best set of books I have read since the first Shannara set. Absolutely fantastic, you bond with the characters so quickly. Can’t wait for book 5.

  37. zach mitchell says:

What an amazing series so far. I have read just about all the fantasy series’ out there and this is definitely one of the best. I am excited about the next three books.

  38. Jared Visser says:

Love your writing, excellent form. The fourth book however was riddled with editing errors…if you need another eye to do a little spellcheck and grammar corrections, you have my e-mail. Can’t wait for book 5!

  39. G M Clarke says:

This is the best series I have read in a while, great chracters ans storyline, I’m looking forward to book 5, but DON’T rush it. Best wishes.

  40. CJ says:

Sorry to hear you wont be on Nook.

    Good luck in the future.

  41. Reweti Davis says:

Thank you for writing this series, it captivated me entirely, from the get go, to the very end. A true fantasy legend. I am an avid reader and this is almost definately my favourite genre and one of my favourite tales. Beautiful and gripping concepts and ideas. Brilliant.

  42. Larynae says:

I got hooked on the first book, could not put it down. I have read all four books now and I am looking forward to the next three you have planned. I also got my mother hooked by letting her read the first book, she is now reading the second book and intends the read the others. We would love to be on a mailing list, if you have one.

  43. lana says:

just finished the fourth book and cant wait for the fifth one to come out i really got hooked on them

  44. Punchy says:

Oove the series! The writing has improved as it goes on, with each book better than the last. Thinblade was single-character focused, but the development of other characters and plot lines keeps improving, adding more dimension to a great story. Keep writing!

  45. john j says:

I got the first book Thinblade last weekend. I just loved it. Book 3 & 4 took less than 2 days to read. Can’t wait for the next 3 or more book.

  46. Ted says:

This is a great series and the writing gets better with each book. Can’t wait for the fifth book to come out.

  47. Anthony says:

As a reader of fantasy for the past 17 years (started with the Shannara series when I was 8) and having read well over 1000 books in the genre, I have to say The Sovereign of the Seven Isles trilogy is amazing, and one of the best series I have ever read in that time. I find it much more enjoyable and better written than other longer fantasy epics (Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time, Etc) with rich characters, with real feelings, and a magnificient world full of magic and wonder that serves as a great background for the series as a place you want to see protected from Phane. I started this series last Sunday, and will end book 4 today on Friday… I just wish book 5 was out already and cannot wait for it.

    • Tracey Glancey says:

Come on, yes I enjoyed the 5 books, but you can’t compare them to Sword of Truth or Wheel of Time. For me personally I don’t connect with the characters at all, not enough depth. I will however continue to read all the books in the series. I am not dissing the series, but just don’t agree with your statement of one of the best of a 1000 in this genre. I too started with the Shannara series 23 years ago and am always looking for new fantasy authors whilst waiting for the next instalments to come out.

  48. Sean says:

Wow! I haven’t enjoyed a series this much since I read a series by an author with the last name Feist!! It took all of a week to read the first four books and I can’t wait to read the rest. Great story! Great character development! I’ve been reading fantasy for the past 20 plus years and this is only the second series that I have read more than once.

Have you thought about coming out with a partial first chapter for the next book?

  49. Frank Steele says:

I love the series and I think the writing has improved with each book. I think your magic system with wizard’s dust is highly creative, a great way to limit the number of “powerful wizards”. And I can tell by the spell effects and some of the magic items you have played Dungeons & Dragons, your reference to the spell Malichi was working on before his death solidified it, nothing like a good ol Lich spell.

HOWEVER, please do not write the phrase “…he was in a fight and he had a sword in his hand. Everything else faded away.” EVER again! Read the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind and find a better way to describe Alexander’s “oneness” with a blade like Richard’s without using the same two sentences over and over and over.

  50. Tom Jacobs says:

Mr. Wells, I wanted to thank you for creating a world that is rich and deep in character and history. I have been reading fantasy for over 33 years. I would put your series on a par with Thomas Covenant Unbeliever, Tolkien and even C.S. Lewis. I really enjoy how there is an undercurrent of real world experience and history that you incorporate into your series. I wonder though if you would develope the background of Alexander’s tactical knowledge a bit more? It always struck me a bit odd that a cattle farmer would have such a complete knack for battle tactics. The stories have been so awesome that I read all four books in a week. I can’t remember the last time I have done something like that! Thank you! I am looking forward to the next three novels!!!!!

  51. Rebecca says:

    Hurry! 🙂

  52. Nicola says:

I have very much enjoyed the books so far, and that is the problem; there seems to be a growing trend, particularly in the fantasy fiction genre, to sell book series when they are not completed.
I am sure it is very flattering for authors to have people begging them for the next exciting instalment however I think that, morally at least, it is fraud.
When I pick up a book, or series, it is like being guided through an adventure by the creator. It is therefore disappointing to find that one has bought something that has no structure or conclusion!
I am afraid that whilst these books have been enjoyable there are many others out there to read and I won’t be hanging around until I have forgotten the plot in this series to buy the next one. Shame, I would have bought the rest had they been available

  53. Sarah says:

I love these books am always looking for a great fantasy read and have gone through all my fave authors and am waiting for them to release more. I got to admit though when reading these books I am reminded of the Sword of Truth series there are a few similarities there (the blade, truth, justice, the shades (chimes) not to mention various other things) Don’t get me wrong this is not a criticism as I said i love these books, got the first 3 weeks ago and now am on book 4 and am eagerly awaiting the 5th.

  54. jo mallon says:

Just to say, I have really enjoyed, the 4 books so far. I downloaded the first one and evven before I had finished that, I had downloaded the rest of them. I couldnt put them down and infact, I read all four within 10 days. I am so pleased, that there is soon to be a fifth, I cant wait x

  55. Marie says:

Thankyou for a great and captivating story so far. I just finished book 4 and I know I will wollow in the pits of despair untill I have read book 5-7.
I got so involved in the story line that my family had to give up telling me to go to bed as I would find myself up all night reading
I look forward to reading book 5 and eargarly wait for its release.

  56. Jason says:

Would it be possible to create a mailing list for us to leave our email addresses for notification when your next book comes out? Often times I read so many different authors I’ll forget to follow up with them months down the line. I’d love to stay informed of your progress..

  57. Jennie says:

I have just devoured all four books in just over two weeks, it has been a long while since finding a series of books that I genuinely could not put down (even on the treadmill at the gym)!
Thank you, and please hurry, I have nothing else as addictive to read.

  58. Dave says:

This is the best series I’ve read in a long time. Bring on Book 5. Maybe Alexander will have a dragon to ride.

  59. james says:

I am in love with this series. I found the first book about 3 weeks ago and could not get enough. Just finshed the forth book and was soooo sad to find out book 5 in not finshed but I will be counting every day amazon did good showing me thinblade

  60. aurorablue says:

What an absolutely amazing book. I couldn’t sleep until I finished the first book and then I bought the rest. They were very inexpensive. So far, I would be willing to pay more for this series. I almost didn’t buy it because it was so inexpensive I thought it would be just a fluff piece, but turned out to be delicious, a steak with all the
trimmings.A book with the right amount of blood and guts, balanced with love and affection and evil balanced with honor and character. It is well written with only a few errors. Is it Commander Sava or Savio or are they two different people?

  61. Hjbernst says:

Do you have a Facebook account or twitter where I can join so I’m alerted to when the new books come out? I love them and are eagerly awaiting them.

  62. Ry says:

I finished all four in a matter of weeks, and found them amazing, couldn’t put them down, imagination catching epic peace of writing and I’ve been trying to fill the gap with other books but still find myself looking for book five of this series at least once a week hope i don’t have to wait much longer

  63. Alkali says:

I am sorry to say that I found out about your books by mere accident, but I am definetely not sorry to say that your books are one of the only ones that I can say I absolutely LOVE. I am a great fan of fantasy, and this series has been one of the only ones I want to read again and again. All the characters are original and have powerful, if not overwhelming, emotions. There is enough suspense and action to glue the reader’s eyes on the book, but with an intricate pattern of romance and deeo friendship tonwarm one’s heart. I simply love the way magic is defined in these books, for it is a very original way. I read the first four books in a week, and I am anxiously waiting for the fifth. I read a lot of books, and I must say the books in this series are some of the best examples of powerful, original and intricate fantasy books that I have read.

  64. Kelly says:

Happy Thanksgiving David! Give us a treat and post some type of update – we are all suffering withdrawal symptoms waiting for your next book (at least I am). It has been a while since we have heard from you here or on Amazon. Is there a place we can sign up for an alert when the book is out?

  65. Craig says:

Any chance of an update on how book 5 is coming along David?

  66. Cindy Pirtle says:

Love the series! Excited for #5!

  67. Jim Fox says:

Just finished Book 4 and am desperate for Book 5 please take some Fairy dust to speed up the publishing date !!!!

  68. Mohit says:

Any update on the book 5 release date?

  69. Jimmie says:

December is here!!!!! Know you’re working hard, keep up the awesome stories. Love the series alot.

  70. clay says:

    Can’t wait for book five

  71. Hannah says:

I love these books! Book 5 was supposed to come out today though and I can’t find it in the kindle store?

  72. Gloria says:

I have been looking forward to book 5 for several months. Hoping that the muse still has hold of David and his friends are busily editing for the fourth time 🙂 My sis just published here, and it is a ton of work. Kudos to you David. You are an excellent story teller, and I’m thinking I will start the series over again to get ready for Book 5.

  73. anthony knox says:

unlike the first 3 i thought the 4th book was kind of depressing. especially the end. I hate depressing books. I hope Isabel doesn’t go go to Phane in the 5th book. Porb gonna stop reading if she does.

  74. Kevin says:

Any update on book 5 would be appreciated! Hopefully we get to find out what is in the 3rd bloodvault!

  75. sean says:

I have very much enjoyed these books. Do you have an update on the release date for the next one in the series? The current date is shown for this month. It is very impolite to not update your site with an expected date for release. Even if it isn’t this month or even the next two months. It would be nice for some kind of update. Look forward to your next book. Sean

  76. Rod says:

    Great series David!!
Any news about book 5? A mailing list or some such would be invaluable. Hope your enjoying the positive feedback about your writing. Really looking forward to the next several books. Cheers from down under.

  77. Jeryme Hunter says:

Well I read book 5 and it is like the rest!! Just a great story with the some of the best imagination I have read. I have read the first for twice and will most defiantly read them all again and again when there is a date for the release of the next book in the series. Patience is my only problem…. I can’t wait for the story to continue. Great characters, better plot, from start to pause in the story while it is being written, both plot and characters build in suspense that keeps the reader wanting more.

  78. Kim says:

Erik…if you see this then know #4 is running out and I would be thrilled with #5 as a surprise on Christmas
    Dad

  79. Michelle Gross says:

Love these books. I’m on book 3. I’m so glad Thinblade came up on my recommendations list on Amazon. I’ve very happy to hear you plan on doing 7 books. They are well written and the storyline is great. Can’t wait to read 4 and 5 and will be impatiently awaiting 6 and 7. Thanks so much! You’re a great author.

  80. david says:

Half way through book 4 – love the books except I hope you get rid of Chloe – can’t stand the ‘my love’ / ‘little one’ dialogue that never varies, it really spoils a good series.
Still looking forward to book 5 though.

  81. Michele says:

Just finished book 5 🙂 As with the other 4 I haven’t been able to put it down, i have loved catching up with everyone and getting to know the new characters, book 6 can’t come quick enough! I’m hoping Alexander and his friends prevail! Hurry David, please!

  82. Richard Hardiman says:

I also really enjoyed this series and wish I had millions of dollars to make a movie or TV series. This is a far more diverse series in character and storyline than most and would really lend itself to modern CG and production techniques. It has all the elements for both adults and kids and would really work if done well.
I read book five in a day and a half. It would have been quicker if I hadn’t had other responsibilities as well, as it was I was only half heartedly attentive and finding any few minutes of down time to read on my phone. Unfortunately might now have to wait 6-12 months for the next one. Great series. Look forward to more from Mr Wells.

  83. Deziray Turner says:

I love these books an I’m seriously hooked 🙂 can’t wait for book 6. I like how there’s still hope.I really don’t know how your going to end the books with only 7 books? I realy love the dragons,Anja.I have a feeling she’s going to do what she wants to do 🙂 an how payne is now being hunted by some thing

just as dark as him self. Pluse the light 🙂 I’ll say their a must read series.

  84. Richard says:

I may be one of your oldest readers judging from the comments. I’ve been steadily reading for 60 plus years. I love the way you’ve built your storyline, and how you split it over different characters to make the whole. I just read book five and I’m sure sorry I have to wait 6 months before the next part of the story continues. My one complaint is, as most authors, you often leave your main characters in a sort of ignorance of things unfolding around them. Strong enough to really overcome more if they don’t blind side themselves. That Commander Henna was so wrapped up in her own self that she didn’t chop his head off in an instant, but had to take time to speak to him in contempt, was dissapointing also. Of course that would end the story and we all want to hear lots more. I so look forward to the “rest of the story”. Now we’ll have to see if Phane catches on about the bones, and relieves her of them so he can control her! Or does Alexander decide to take the next step to become as powerful as Phane and more so because of his unique ability.

  85. martyn crawley says:

Loved cursed bones, became hooked on the series 3 months ago and cant wait for next 2 in series. Well done.

  86. Alexandra Holmes says:

I have read all five of your books one after the other and loved every one. Your characters are believable and the story is excellent. You have a wonderful way of telling a story that captures the reader from page one and I can’t wait for the next book. So sad that you killed the dragons though, I would have loved for them to have been saved and joined the fight against Phane.

  87. I finished book 5 last night and have to tell you, that I’m in the early stages of grief having lost the company of your wonderful characters in the upcoming nights. Your skill as a writer continues to improve from story to story; I’m convinced that if you continue along this course, you will one day be one of the greats in the field of fantasy. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us. I eagerly await your next installment.

The best I could find is this old thread which I remember finding before book five. Hey David, please change the title to book six and other things and give us an update even if it’s to tell us to bug off its coming. I really love them and would even get an audio edition (hint), update please

I got my Kindle for Christmas & Thinblade was the first book I read. I whizzed through it & all the rest because I couldn’t put them down. I didn’t realize the series wasn’t finished until I finished book 5, Cursed Bones.I was distraught! I’m having withdrawals. Can’t wait for the next one. The only problem is now I know when I’m finished then I’ll have to wait months for the last book. Oh, woe is me. 🙂
